4th ANNUAL FREEDOM TRAIL LUNCHEON

Printable Invitation/Flyer    Commemorative Booklet Ad Form

Friday, July 2, 2010 @ 11:30 AM

Location: Casa Monica Hotel, 95 Cordova Street, St. Augustine, Florida

The 46th Anniversary of the Signing of the Landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 will be commemorated at the 4th Annual Freedom Trail Luncheon at the Casa Monica Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida.  ACCORD is so very blessed to have noted Civil Rights Leader, The Honorable United States Congressman John Lewis as Keynote Speaker and Special Guest, Kathryn Fentress.

Often called "one of the most courageous persons the Civil Rights Movement ever produced," John Lewis has dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he calls "The Beloved Community" in America.

An architect of and a keynote speaker at the historic March on Washington in August 1963, John Lewis was beaten and arrested numerous times as he organized sit-in demonstrations at segregated lunch counters, participated in the famous Freedom Rides, and “Bloody Sunday.” The senseless cruelty of the segregated South helped hasten the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

He was elected to Congress in November 1986 and has served as U.S. Representative of Georgia's Fifth Congressional District since then. His dedication to the highest ethical standards and moral principles has won him the admiration of many of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the United States Congress.

Ms. Fentress, a 19 year-old pre-med student at Duke University, was arrested on the steps of the Monson Motor Lodge Restaurant on June 11th, 1964 along with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Clyde Jenkins, and Rev. William England for seeking to be served. She spent over five days in the St. Johns County Jail for the charges of intent to breach the peace, conspiracy and trespassing with malice. She was held under a $900 bond.

State Senator Tony Hill will present the second "Dr. Robert Hayling Award for Valor" to a deserving individual for his/her courage displayed during the in the Civil Rights Movement of St. Augustine, Florida.
